Photo Album: The Last Town Chorus & Camera Obscura

Photos taken Friday August 24, 2007 at South Street Seaport free concert. (This was supposed to have been posted Saturday, but WordPress would not comply.)

Even two hours before the show, people are waiting!

One of the monster speaker sets; I’d be to the right of this.

I didn’t know who anyone was, so I snapped this pic Just In Case…

… it turned out to be Megan Hickey of The Last Town Chorus!

Above view; it will be filled with people. Filled!

… and even a frikkin land shark comes to listen!

I can’t describe the kind of music The Last Town Chorus does, but it’s a hint that their album is called The Wire Waltz. Listen to some samples at their MySpace page.

Then it was time for the band Camera Obscura to play. They are from David Bamford country: Glasgow.

As the sun went down, my pictures got darker and darker. I tried something new with some of them: an automatic color correction feature in Photo Toolkit. Suddenly photos that were nearly all-black revealed people in them! You can probably tell which ones were goosed that way.

Note the guy in the middle helping on percussion: Nigel Baillie…

… he plays a whole bunch of instruments; here, guitar.

As far as the eye could see and farther than a flash could penetrate…

… it was heads all around. Packed, packed, packed!

This pair were huge fans: they mouthed all the lyrics!

At the end, drummer Lee Thomson makes a huge leap to the front of the stage and bows.

That was supposed to be all, but the crowd wouldn’t stand for it. There was mad applause for an encore. For the first of two encore songs, Megan Hickey joined the group. They hadn’t rehearsed this. It still went well.

Waves goodbye.

Camera Obscura describes their music simply as Pop. I guess it’s that, but also more. Hit their MySpace page to listen to some samples. In the first listed song, Come Back Margaret, there’s a spot where they hand clap. Oh, there were plenty of Camera Obscura fans in that crowd. They knew when to break into that hand clap!

The Last Town Chorus and Camera Obscura are touring together. The next night, they were in Canada! Here’s an account of that performance from another blogger.
