Major eDonkey Servers Down

September 22, 2007

DonkeyServer, BigBang & Byte Devils eDonkey servers down/offline [update: dead link]
According to anti-piracy.nl, 12 “BigBang” eD2k servers are being offline for 2 weeks already, after their hosting provider received a cease and desist letter from the dutch anti piracy organization BREIN.

Once again, it shows that their news report is full of deception and misinformation.

BREIN claims that those eDonkey servers facilitate and provide illegal content which they offer by payment. Now how ridiculous is that!

Also, DonkeyServer 1-6 are down/offline, along with Byte Devils and some other servers which were the major ones. It’s unclear if it has anything to do with BREINs action. It could also mean that other servers decided to shutdown so people would move on to the serverless Kademlia (Kad) network.

This is good news only, no more servers is no more centralization. Kad is a completely decentralized network, which enables searches without the use of an eDonkey server.

This I was beginning to wonder about:

Forget the eD2k servers, many of them left are fake, setup by anti piracy organizations to monitor you.

Now that the eD2k servers are gone and I can’t trust the rest, I’ll have to find a tutorial about KAD.

I don’t have many things left in my P2P queue. And once they are done, I’ll most likely be finished with P2P. There are other services that are faster. They don’t have the historical depth of selection, but there isn’t much stuff I’m looking for (and there’s just about zero new stuff that interests me at all). Plus, the CopyNazis can’t infiltrate them.

The Biggest Ever BitTorrent Leak: MediaDefender Internal Emails Go Public
When TorrentFreak reported that Media Defender (MD) was behind the video site MiiVi, they cast doubt on us. Now, in what is surely the biggest BitTorrent leak ever, nearly 700mb of MD’s emails have gone public. When MD’s Randy Saaf found out we rumbled MiiVi he said, “This is really fucked.” This is too, but much more so.

Unfortunately for Media Defender – a company dedicated to mitigating the effects of internet leaks – they can do nothing about being the subject of the biggest BitTorrent leak of all time. Over 700mb of their own internal emails, dating back over 6 months have been leaked to the internet in what will be a devastating blow to the company. Many are very recent, having September 2007 dates and the majority involve the most senior people in the company. Apparently this is not the first time that a MediaDefender email leaked onto the Internet.

Go read the full article. This is a classic.

Someday we’ll have leaks like this from the White House, Pentagon, CIA, etc.

The once-mighty will fall.

A Third Post-iTunes Fable For NBC: Steve Jobs Is Journeyman

September 7, 2007

Chuck comes through with a leak of Journeyman!

Some clever NBC promotion embedded within it. Today Show when Zucker reigned.

I have to give credit to a brother writer.

Yeah, the director too. (Support the WGA, DGA!)

The Jman presents some m4Dd skI77z too!

But these next photos explain why NBC cannot beat Steve Jobs. And also how the iPhone came to be.

Do you see NBC? You cannot beat Steve Jobs. He’s a Journeyman too. The iPhone is obviously technology he stole while visiting the future. He’s already seen your abysmal and tragic failure with Amazon’s Unbox. He’s already seen Zucker having to resign in disgrace! He’s already seen a near-dead NBC being unloaded by GE to Rupert Murdoch!

See it! See it!

And the iPhone was created by Apple — in 2020!

Movie Studios Bask in Blockbuster Summer

Hollywood lived its own second-chance “Rocky” story this summer as a business that looked to be going down for the count two years ago rebounded with record revenue and an unparalleled string of blockbuster hits.

The movie industry had its first $4 billion summer and will finish with a haul of about $4.15 billion from the first weekend in May through Labor Day, according to box-office tracker Media By Numbers.

That was up 8 percent from last summer and surpassed the previous high of $3.95 billion in summer 2004.

Emphasis added by me.

Remember it, remember it, remember it!

They don’t seem to understand: sales are shit when the movies are shit! People won’t line up to pay for what they don’t want to see!

A Post-iTunes Fable For NBC

September 1, 2007

Once Upon A Time…

.

nbc-fable-002.jpg

In a strange faraway dreamland called California, there were a collection of people called Suits.

nbc-fable-003.jpg

And by luck the Suits got to hang out with all the pretty little ladies. Because the Suits had power.

nbc-fable-004.jpg

In their little dreamland, the Suits failed to notice some other people among them.

nbc-fable-005.jpg

These people had what were called m4dD skI77z. Because they couldn’t hang out around pretty ladies. There was no time for that. Besides, they hated Suits.

nbc-fable-007.jpg

The power of the Suits rested entirely on their keeping goodies away from people until they deigned to allow people to see them.

nbc-fable-009.jpg

In fact, at one point the Suits withdrew some goodies from a marketplace that was very, very popular with ordinary people. It dimmed some of the brightness of that marketplace.

nbc-fable-008.jpg

The Suits thought that would give them more power. But it didn’t.

nbc-fable-010.jpg

For the people with m4dD skI77z operated in a different land. A land called cyberspace. And cyberspace was bigger than any single marketplace, no matter how very, very popular it was with people.

nbc-fable-011.jpg

And in cyberspace, people could get anything. Anything and everything.

nbc-fable-012.jpg

The Suits woke up one day to find out cyberspace was blowing up their asses, exploding their little dreamland.

nbc-fable-013.jpg

The Suits found themselves on the outside, with their power slipping away, as they tried to stop their fall.

nbc-fable-014.jpg

The Suits used to have power. And they used that power badly. Very, very badly.

nbc-fable-015.jpg

Suits, meet Chuck. He’s out there. In cyberspace.

Welcome to reality, NBC.

Recognize these pictures?

This is the nightmare you have just created.

Embrace your downfall.

NBC To Give Away Show Pilots

August 27, 2007

New media, new ideas tout shows for fall

NEW YORK — To launch their fall lineups, the major networks are turning to the Web like never before, offering viewers the chance to see premiere episodes for free and producing original content around their new series that doubles as entertainment and advertising.

And:

NBC, which is utilizing the tactic most aggressively, is offering downloads of the premiere episodes of the new dramas “Chuck,” “Life” and “Journeyman” on Amazon.com starting Sept. 10.

Also around that date, the 4 million members of Facebook’s Apple students group will be able to exclusively download the three premiere episodes on iTunes. A week later, the iTunes downloads will be widely available.

NBC also is making the premiere episodes of “Chuck,” “Life” and “Journeyman” as well as “Bionic Woman” available as free VOD offerings on about 30 cable and satellite systems, including Comcast, Time Warner, Cox and Dish Network starting Sept. 10. A week later, streaming video of the “Life” pilot will be exclusively available on AOL, “Journeyman” on MSN and “Chuck” on Yahoo.

There also will be one more online sampling program starting Sept. 4 that involves a partnership with a major retailer, but NBC declined to provide specific details. Additionally, NBC will screen the full premiere episodes of “Journeyman” and “Chuck” on United Airlines flights.

September 10th?!!?

I’ve got news for you, NBC. I’m still looking for an early leak of Journeyman. It hasn’t happened yet. Just about everyone has already seen the first episodes of Chuck, Bionic Woman, Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Pushing Daisies. But Journeyman? Nope! (Hell, CBS’s Cane and The Big Bang Theory are also available.)

Don’t believe me, NBC?

Here are three screensnaps from Bionic Woman. Note: I do not have this on my hard drive. This was uploaded six days ago to a site where anyone can view it with a mouse click. The screensnaps were done while it was streaming from the site.

bionic01.jpg

bionic02.jpg

bionic03.jpg

I’ve purposely selected three snaps that reveal nothing other than what you, NBC, would recognize: That Bionic Woman is indeed already out there for everyone to see. I don’t think I’ve spoiled anything for anyone with these nebulous screensnaps.

You, NBC, might have visions of partnering with Amazon and iTunes in order to be kewl, but the only people who will get the pilots that way are people who would more or less watch them on TV anyway. That’s not much of a vanguard for real buzz. In fact, you better hope that Amazon and iTunes don’t experience any problems distributing that stuff. Or you’ll have the kind of buzz you never intended to create.

So, NBC, if you’re not going to do it, you better hope someone else does it for you: Leak Journeyman now.

Comcast Finds A New Way To Be A Bastard

August 17, 2007

Comcast Throttles BitTorrent Traffic, Seeding Impossible
Over the past weeks more and more Comcast users started to notice that their BitTorrent transfers were cut off. Most users report a significant decrease in download speeds, and even worse, they are unable to seed their downloads. A nightmare for people who want to keep up a positive ratio at private trackers and for the speed of BitTorrent transfers in general.

Unfortunately, these more aggressive throttling methods can’t be circumvented by simply enabling encryption in your BitTorrent client. It is reported that Comcast is using an application from Sandvine to throttle BitTorrent traffic. Sandvine breaks every (seed) connection with new peers after a few seconds if it’s not a Comcast user. This makes it virtually impossible to seed a file, especially in small swarms without any Comcast users. Some users report that they can still connect to a few peers, but most of the Comcast customers see a significant drop in their upload speed.

The throttling works like this: A few seconds after you connect to someone in the swarm the Sandvine application sends a peer reset message (RST flag) and the upload immediately stops. Most vulnerable are users in a relatively small swarm where you only have a couple of peers you can upload the file to. Only seeding seems to be prevented, most users are able to upload to others while the download is still going, but once the download is finished, the upload speed drops to 0. Some users also report a significant drop in their download speeds, but this seems to be less widespread. Worse on private trackers, likely that this is because of the smaller swarm size.

Advance notice to Time Warner: do not try to pull this shit on Roadrunner.

Comcast will eventually be the ISP of decrepit senior citizens who will ooh and ahh over the miracle of that there internetworkthingie.

If Verizon was smart, they’d aggressively target Comcast areas for building up FIOS.

BitTorrent Anime Downloaders Identified, $3500 Bill in the Mail

Odex Pt. Ltd is a Singapore-based company that distributes anime in South East Asia. Created in 1998 it started distributing anime in 2000, later with titles such as Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, Mobile Suit Gundam and Chrono Crusade.

In 2007 a decision was made in the company to start targeting people who share their material via BitTorrent after they claimed their sales had dropped 60-70 percent in just 2 years.

Jaysus! If I had a business and was losing that much, I’d go apeshit too. But given the new realities of the Net, I’d try to devise a way to get back some of that lost money without provoking death threats.

ABC Kicks NBC’s Ass For Fall TV Buzz

August 14, 2007

While NBC dithers over leaking Journeyman (do it!do it!do it!), ABC is holding a free advanced screening of the much-buzzed Pushing Daisies. If you live in the Los Angeles area, check this out.

WHEN: On Thursday, August 16, at 8:00 p.m. PT,
WHERE: Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Hollywood, CA 90038

I mean how can you pass up a screening in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery?! This is one of those days that I wished I lived in L.A..
